You check your voicemail at the end of the day and find two messages. Meanwhile the phone rang eleven times. Where did the other nine callers go? Almost always, to the next company in the search results.
Why callers hang up instead of leaving a message
For a home service customer, the call is not a casual enquiry. The sink is leaking, the furnace is off or the quote needs to be in by Friday. They are not looking for someone to call them back later. They are looking for the first company that answers.
- Voicemail is the opposite of an answer. It asks them to wait, with no promise of when.
- They assume it will not be returned. Most people have left a message that went nowhere, and they remember it.
- The next result is one tap away. A competitor costs them nothing to try.
- An urgent problem cannot wait for tomorrow. A message left at 7pm may as well be a message left next week.
What this means for a trade business
You are on a roof, under a sink or driving between jobs when the phone rings. You cannot answer, and that is the nature of the work, not a failing. But the caller has no way of knowing that. To them, an unanswered phone looks like a business that is closed or does not care.
The cost is not the voicemail you read. It is the calls that never became a voicemail at all. They do not appear anywhere in your records, which is why this problem stays invisible.
How to see your own number
Do not trust an industry average. Your phone already holds the answer.
- Pull your call log for the last two weeks.
- Mark every call that went unanswered or to voicemail.
- Subtract the ones that left a message.
- For the rest, check how many were from numbers you do not recognise. Those are the new customers who did not call back.
Multiply that count by what an average job is worth to you. That is a lower bound on what voicemail costs you, because some of those callers would not have booked anyway. The missed call revenue calculator does the arithmetic once you have the counts.
Fixes, in order of cost
- Return calls fast. Free, but you can only do it between jobs, and the best moment has usually passed.
- Forward or ring two phones. Free to cheap, and it helps when someone else can pick up. See our guide to call forwarding for contractors for the setup and its limits.
- Answer the call with a service. A person or an AI picks up and takes the details. An AI answering service goes a step further and books the job on the call, so there is nothing to chase.
If most of your missed calls turn out to be a name, an address and a time that works, the fix that closes the loop is the one that can see your calendar and commit. See the cost breakdown for how the options are priced, or how Ansdale handles a call.
Trades where this hurts most: electricians and roofers, where each missed call can be a large estimate.
