Weekend Answering Service: How to Cover Saturday and Sunday Calls

Saturday morning is when a lot of homeowners finally deal with the list. The dripping tap, the AC that’s been making a noise all week, the fence quote they keep meaning to get. They’re home, they’ve got coffee, and they’re working through the numbers on their phone. If yours goes to a recording that says you’ll call back Monday, most of them will try the next company before you’ve finished breakfast.

That doesn’t mean you have to work weekends. It means someone, or something, should pick up. Here’s what weekend coverage actually involves for a small service business, the options and what they cost, and how to set it up so it covers Saturday and Sunday without touching your weekday phones. A disclosure up front: we make Ansdale, an AI receptionist, and it’s one of the options below.

Who actually calls on a weekend?

Pull up your call log for the last couple of months and look at Saturdays and Sundays. For most trades, weekend calls fall into three groups:

  • Planners. People booking estimates and non-urgent work for the coming week. They’re easy to win and easy to lose: whoever offers them a time first usually gets the job.
  • Real problems. A water heater that’s let go, no heat on a cold Saturday night, a storm that’s taken shingles off. These callers will pay for weekend service and won’t wait for Monday.
  • Everything else. Existing customers checking on a job, suppliers, sales calls and wrong numbers. None of it needs you on a Sunday.

Weekend coverage is really about the first two groups: book the planners and get the real problems to whoever is on call.

What are your options for weekend calls?

Voicemail and a Monday callback

Free, and fine if your phone barely rings on weekends. The trouble is that plenty of callers hang up rather than leave a message, and by Monday the ones who did may already have booked someone else. If you stay with voicemail, record a weekend-specific greeting that tells people exactly when you’ll call back and what to do if it’s urgent. We’ve written voicemail greetings for contractors, including weekend versions, you can copy.

An on-call rotation

One person carries the business phone each weekend. It works, and it’s how a lot of shops run. It also means somebody answers price-shopper calls from the kids’ football game, and in a one- or two-person business the somebody is always you.

A live answering service

Operators answer in your company name, take the details and pass urgent calls to your on-call number. Ask how weekends are billed before you sign. Some services price nights and weekends the same as weekdays (Ruby says it charges no extra for coverage at particular times, and Abby Connect advertises no weekend upcharge; see our Ruby pricing breakdown), while others add a surcharge or only include weekends on higher plans. Also ask whether the operator can book into your calendar or just takes a message, because a message still means a callback.

An AI receptionist

Software answers every call, asks your questions and books the planner into an open slot next week while they’re still on the phone. Urgent calls get routed to you under rules you set. It costs the same on a Sunday as on a Tuesday, and it handles three calls at once just as well as one. Where it’s weaker is the caller who’s upset or describing something unusual, so make sure it can hand those calls to a person. We explain how it works in what is an AI receptionist.

How do you send only weekend calls to a service?

You don’t have to hand over your phone all week. Most setups use a schedule:

  1. Use your phone system’s business hours. VoIP systems, and apps like Google Voice on its business plans, let you set working hours and route calls differently outside them. Set Friday evening to Monday morning as “closed” and forward those calls to your service.
  2. Or forward unanswered calls only. Conditional forwarding sends a call on after it rings a few times with no answer. That covers weekends, but it covers weekdays too, so it suits people who want backup all week.
  3. Test it on a real weekend. Call your own number from a friend’s phone at 10 a.m. on a Saturday and again late on Sunday. Check what the caller hears, what you receive afterwards, and whether the urgent call actually reaches your on-call phone.

Carrier forwarding codes on a mobile don’t usually support schedules, so if your business line is a cell phone you may need to switch forwarding on Friday and off on Monday by hand, or move the number to a system that can. Our guide to call forwarding for contractors goes through the setups.

What should the weekend rules be?

Whatever answers, write these down before the first weekend:

  • What counts as urgent. Be specific to your trade: active leaks, no heat below a temperature you pick, no power to the whole house, a door that won’t lock. Everything else waits.
  • Who gets the urgent call, and in what order. The on-call tech first, then you, then what happens if nobody picks up.
  • Whether you’ll book weekend work. If you don’t do Saturdays, the service should offer Monday slots, not promise a visit you won’t make.
  • What you charge for weekend call-outs. If there’s an emergency or weekend fee, callers should hear it before someone drives out, not on the invoice.
  • How you’ll get the details. A text or email summary per call, so Monday morning starts with a list, not a pile of voicemails.

How much does weekend coverage cost?

It depends almost entirely on how the service counts usage. Per-minute and per-call services cost more in the weeks you’re busiest, and weekends after a storm are exactly those weeks. A rough way to budget: count last month’s weekend calls, multiply by a realistic length of three minutes, and price that on the plans you’re considering, then double it for your worst weekend of the year. Our virtual receptionist pricing guide compares the billing models side by side.

Ansdale, ours, covers weekends on every plan at no extra charge: $49, $99 or $199 a month with AI minutes included and booking on every plan. Extra minutes are billed per minute rather than calls being cut off. If your phone rarely rings on weekends, a good voicemail greeting and a fast Monday callback may honestly be all you need.

Questions people ask

What is a weekend answering service?

A service that answers your business calls on Saturdays and Sundays when you’re not working. It takes details or books appointments, and passes urgent calls to whoever is on call. It can be a live operator service or an AI receptionist.

Do answering services charge more for weekends?

Some do and some don’t. Ruby, for example, says it charges no extra for coverage at particular times, while other services add surcharges or include weekends only on higher plans. Ask before you sign.

Can I use an answering service only on weekends?

Yes. Set business hours in your phone system so calls from Friday evening to Monday morning forward to the service, or switch forwarding on and off by hand if your line is a cell phone.

Should I take weekend jobs if I don’t usually work weekends?

Only the ones worth it. Many shops book weekend planners into Monday slots and only send true emergencies to an on-call tech, with the weekend fee stated on the call.
