When you are the plumber, the electrician or the HVAC tech, you are also the on-call rota. Every call that comes in at night lands on you. Some of them are worth getting out of bed for, and many are not. The skill is telling them apart before you pick up.
Decide what counts as an emergency, in writing
Do this once, on a quiet day, rather than at 2am. Write down the situations that always get a call back within minutes and the ones that wait until morning.
- Wake me: active water you cannot shut off, no heat in freezing weather, a burning smell or sparks, power loss that affects safety.
- First thing tomorrow: a slow drain, a noisy unit, a dripping tap, a quote request.
Your list will differ by trade and by area. The point is that the rule is decided before the call, not during it.
Know what you need from the caller
An emergency call is only useful if you get the right details in the first minute. For most trades that means:
- Name and a number that works.
- The address.
- What is happening, in plain words.
- Whether anyone is in danger, and whether the water, gas or power can be shut off.
With those four, you can decide whether to go, and you can talk someone through a shutoff while you drive.
Stop being woken by calls that are not emergencies
The real cost of an on-call phone is not the true emergency. It is the three calls a week that were not, and the sleep they cost you. A phone that rings you for everything makes you resent the phone, and then you stop answering it.
The fix is a layer between the caller and you that applies your rule. A person or an AI picks up, collects the details and only escalates the calls that meet your definition. Everything else is booked for the morning.
Options for a one person shop
- You, all the time. Free and exhausting, and you still miss calls when you are on another one.
- A live answering service. A person takes details and passes them on. Check the after hours premium, because published guides often report 25% to 50% extra on nights and weekends.
- An AI receptionist. It answers every call at once, collects the details, escalates what you define as urgent and books the rest. Flat pricing, with all hours included, from $49 a month.
