Do Customers Mind Talking to an AI Receptionist?

The worry is fair. If a customer rings you with a leaking pipe and gets a machine, will they hang up and call someone else? The answer is mostly no, but only if the call is handled well.

What the research suggests

Results depend on who you ask and how the question is put. One UK survey by Moneypenny reported that around 59% of consumers were comfortable with an AI answering their call promptly, and that figure rose to about 68% when they knew they could reach a person at any point. Other surveys find a sizeable minority who would prefer a human greeting.

Treat these as a direction, not a rule. They point the same way: customers accept AI when it is fast, honest and does not trap them.

What callers actually dislike

  • Loops. Being made to repeat the same thing, or getting an answer that ignores what they said.
  • Delay. A long pause before the AI responds feels broken.
  • No way out. No route to a person when the problem is urgent or emotional.
  • Being misled. A caller who feels tricked into thinking they are talking to a person is more annoyed than one who is told.

None of that is about AI as such. It is about a bad call, and a human receptionist can cause all four.

What callers do not mind

The callers of a trade business want a short list of things: someone to answer, someone to understand the problem, a time that works and a confirmation. Those are routine steps, and an AI can do them faster than a message service can. A caller who is booked in 90 seconds, with a text confirming the time, rarely cares what answered.

What makes the difference

  • Speed to answer. Picking up straight away is the biggest single advantage over voicemail.
  • Booking on the call. The caller ends the call with a time, not a promise of a callback.
  • A sensible emergency rule. Urgent calls should reach a person quickly. You decide what counts as urgent.
  • Your own business details. Correct hours, service area and prices make it sound like your shop, not a script.

The honest limits

An AI receptionist is a poor fit for an upset customer who needs to be heard, a complicated negotiation or a call that depends on judgement you have not written down. Those calls should reach a person. See what happens on the call, including disclosure, on our answering service vs virtual receptionist vs AI page.

Try it yourself

The best test is to ring it. Hear a call in the live demo, then read how it works and what an AI receptionist does on every call. Plans start at $49 a month.
